BLACKHAWK
WRESTLERS
HAVING BANNER
SEASON

February 12, 2010

 The 2009-2010 Fennville
Blackhawk wrestlers are capping
off a season to remember.  Thurs-
day evening before one of the
largest wrestling crowds in years,
the host Hawks defeated
Bloomingdale 56-24 in the district
semi finals and then defeated
Grandville Calvin Christian, 56-24
to win the first wrestling district title in the schools history.

 In the Southwestern Athletic
Conference this season, the Hawks
finished the regular season in second
place with a fine 8-2 league record behind
Decatur.  In the SAC championships that
took place on February 6th, at Watervliet,
the Hawks finished in fourth place behind
winner Decatur, Martin and Bangor.  All
three schools are noted wrestling power-
houses and the Hawks held their own.
Two Blackhawk wrestlers won their weight
class.  Seniors Mike Fries (145) and Alex
Oviedo (275) each won their weight
classes.

Other Hawk’s placing at the SAC
championships were, D’Metri Martinez 3rd at 215; Miguel Salinas 3rd at 130;  Alex
Clemons 4th at 189; Ryan Gillette 4th at 103; and Noe Sanchez 5th at 112.

In January, as the conference schedule started, the Blackhawk wrestling season hit
the low point as they lost a teammate.  Freshman Nathaniel Hernandez passed away,
suffering a seizure after returning home from the January 6th contest.  Nathaniel’s
memory won’t fade and the team rally’s around his memory.  The team has dedicated
the season in Nathaniel’s memory.

On Saturday, February 13th, the team traveled to Holton for the individual districts.
Four Hawks earned the right to compete in the individual Regional’s next weekend.
Senior Mike Fries was the champion at 145 lbs and has a season record of 38-3.
Finishing 3rd place at 215 is Junior D’Metri Martinez (27-4) while Senior John
Milesckiewicz (151) and Miguel Salinas (130-29-15) each finished in fourth place.

The Blackhawk wrestlers will travel to Bangor on Wednesday, February 17 to
compete in the team regional’s against Covert that surprised the Bangor Vikings 53-
21.  Head coach Adam Bayne says, “Covert has turned around their program as well
and it should be a great match up for us”.  “Please make the trip to Bangor and
support our wrestlers”, adds Coach Bayne.

It's been a great week to be a Blackhawk!
