Saugatuck Going to the Dogs to Fight Cancer American Cancer Society Hosts Event to Benefit the Relay For Life of Allegan County Lakeshore
Saugatuck Michigan. –When a person is struggling with cancer, the network of support a patient receives is not limited to friends, family—or even the human race. Sometimes, a cancer patient’s strongest supporter is the family dog. To celebrate this bond, area canines, with owners in tow, will take to the track this summer as part of the American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life event. Owners and dogs will be able to walk together toward a cancer cure.
This noncompetitive dog walk event is planned for Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010 from 10: 00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Village Square Park in Saugatuck. Registration opens at 10: 00 a.m with a brief opening ceremony at 11 a.m. A walk through Saugatuck will follow immediately afterward. Attendees and their dogs can compete for a variety of prizes, including “Best Dressed Dog,” “Cutest Dog” and “Dog-Owner Look Alike”. Pet adoptions will be available, as well as information about nutrition, tobacco cessation, exercise and sun safety.
A suggested donation of $10 per dog will benefit the fight against cancer through funding of research and the provision of local patient services. Some of these services include Road to Recovery, a program that provides rides to treatment for cancer patients and their caregivers; as well as various Cancer Resource Centers, set up in hospitals to provide immediate information and support after a diagnosis.
Remember that this is a family-friendly event, so any dogs that may pose a danger to others (pets or people) will not be allowed at the Bark For Life event.
“When someone has cancer, family is the first to step up and be supportive,” said Ken Greschak, director, American Cancer Society Southwest Michigan Area Service Center. “For many people, dogs are a part of their family, and can provide invaluable support and comfort to cancer patients through the stress of their cancer journey. Bark For Life is the canine counterpart to Relay For Life, celebrating our canine caregivers, just as we honor other family members who support their loved ones fighting cancer during Relay For Life.” The local annual Relay For Life of Allegan County Lakeshore takes place in June at the Fennville High School track.
About the American Cancer Society The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in ground breaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. Sidetrack Bar and Grill Not Sidelined in Fight Against Cancer
Fennville, MI - Besides delicious food and a great drink prices, Sidetrack Bar and Grill is more than a local watering hole. They have provided more than $25,000 toward the fight against cancer in Allegan County Lakeshore. More importantly, they have had fun doing it.
As a team in both the 2009 and 2010 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Allegan County Lakeshore events, “Sidetrackers” has been the number one fundraising team in the area since the inauguration of the Relay event.
They’ve reached this great accomplishment by skipping the bake sales and spaghetti dinners typically associated with fundraising activity. Instead, Sidetrackers got creative and fun, hosting everything from hillbilly horseshoes, playing the game with toilet seats instead of actual horseshoes; trivia games; a children’s carnival; and a make-shift “jail” permanently located in the Sidetracker establishment - allowing patrons to “arrest” others and pay “bail” to get out - proceeds of which all benefit their Relay team.
The $25,000 raised by Sidetrack Bar and Grill allows the American Cancer Society to provide to provide the following:
• 8,300 hours of access to the ACS toll-free Cancer Information Center, which provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week access to information on cancer and its treatment, as well as providing information about local services and healthy lifestyle. This phone number is: 1800-227-2345. • 25 all expenses paid stays at the Grand Rapids American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, a facility where cancer patients and their caregivers can stay for free while receiving treatment far from home. • 250 Reach To Recovery visits, an American Cancer Society program that introduces breast cancer patients with select survivors who can answer questions and provide emotional support • 30,000 petri dishes for researchers to continue looking for a disease that takes too much from too many.
Clearly, Sidetrack Bar and Grill is more than just a gathering spot - it’s a cornerstone of community involvement. Everyone needs to eat, and everyone enjoys a night out occasionally. Sadly, most everyone has also been touched by cancer in some way. On behalf of the American Cancer Society as well as the entire Relay For Life of Allegan County Lakeshore, we encourage the Lakeshore community to visit Sidetrack Bar and Grill. Please thank them for their generosity and community spirit. When a cure for cancer is found, Sidetrack will most certainly have the biggest and best celebration party around.
Sidetrack Bar and Grill is located at 1590 56th Street in Fennville.
