FENNVILLE'S FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
A Blackhawk Challenge
BY: Coach Sam Morehead

"Blackhawk Country" Folks:
Definition: A people, who time after time over the past 60 years, when told that
something couldn't be done----DID IT ANYWAY.

Yes!  That's all of us.  We were raised in a community that has a first class school
campus all built through community efforts: and excellent district library and school
libraries; community housing for all; doctors/dentists; a GREAT community athletic
center: excellent recreation programs; service organizations (Lions' Club, VFW,
American Legion, Ministerial Association, Sunshine Club, Masons, Rebekkahs, Goose
Festival Committee, etc.); excellent athletic facilities; a fine arts program to "brag"
about; hunting; fishing; lakes; etc.

The list is endless but exists because you can't be a BLACKHAWK without BELIEVING in
the power of people.  Whatever the challenges presented to the Fennville community,
the good old American "coulda', woulda' shoulda';" and a "get'er done" spirit always
prevails.  Fennville is the little city that can always figure a solution, thanks to our
determined Blackhawk Spirit.

It has been brought to our attention that a new challenge has presented itself - a
challenge that all of us might be able to accept.  Whether you've stayed in the Fennville
area, or migrated to one of the other great states, you are aware that times are
especially tough in Michigan economically.  Our school board (5 out of 7 are Fennville
graduates) spent much of this spring agonizing over $1,000,000 worth of budget cuts
that had to be made.  They worked diligently to keep academic achievement the focus
of their decisions.

Simultaneously they were faced with an issue at the George Bruder Memorial Stadium -
a stadium that has been home to many successful football teams, track teams,
cheerleading squads and marching bands.  The stadium lights have been declared
unsafe and "must be replaced."  This has to happen in order for Fennville's own
"Friday Night Lights" to shine this coming fall.

Once again, "the little city that can" has been presented with a challenge.  We want
you to know that the school board is committed to this facility project.  It's just that
those of us involved in activities impacted by the stadium also know that $125,000
spent on lights means $125,000 less available for educating students in the classroom.

We are wondering if the thousands of great athletic teams and marching bands that
have experienced so many successes at FPS would consider this an opportunity to
"give back" to programs that offered you so many opportunities as students in
Fennville.  Yes, you are invited to make a financial contribution to our "Friday Night
Lights" project.  Each dollar received impacts the future of Fennville students both
athletically and academically.

For the past 60 years the Fennville community has solved all of its problems through
teamwork.  The FPS coaching staff, band leaders, and booster groups are asking you
to help us look to the future and consider a contribution to "Fennville's Friday Night
Lights."  We can show once more that we will be able to borrow from a popular contry
song:
"I'm Proud to be a Blackhawk and support the stadium lights."

(Sung to the tune of "I'm Proud to be an American)

Sincerely,
Coach Sam Morehead, Mrs "Coach" Gus Charles, Mrs. "Coach" Joyce Bruder, Coach
Tim Schipper, Coach Kevin Souders, Coach Larry Morse, Coach Hedy Morse, Coach
Chris Raak, Fennville Athletic Boosters, Fennville Band Boosters

P.S. Gifts should be made to the Fennville Public Schools and will be acknowledged as a
charitable contribution.
