BLACKHAWK POWER

The Fennville Blackhawks Varsity
Boys basketball team has attracted a
very large fan base, The Nation! This
week has been a very challenging week
for those connected with the loss of Wes
Leonard on March 3rd. The first decision,
to play the first contest in the districts at
Lawrence versus the Lawrence Tigers.
The team knew in their hearts, Wes
would have wanted them to play. Next,
would Lawrence’s gym hold the requests
for tickets? The Tigers agreed to move
the game to Hope College’s DeVos Field-
house. DeVos can hold up to 3,500.
So the move was on.
The first game was so emotionally
draining on everyone involved. Support
from friends, the community and
neighboring schools, the team made history by recording their 21st win. Twenty one wins tied the school
record for the most wins in a season. The Blackhawks win with a score of 65-54.
On Tuesday the community supported the team and the Leonard family as Wes Leonard was laid to
rest. The world found out what this 16 year old was like. Something that everyone that knew Wes already
knew. Wes Leonard was a kid that everyone loved. He was everyone’s friend regardless if you played
sports, was involved in the plays or just passed him in the hallway. He was what former Coach Sam
Morehead said, just what you wanted in a son.
On Wednesday again at
DeVos Fieldhouse, game two
was against conference rival,
Bangor. The Vikings and
Blackhawks had played in the
SAC Tournament Champion-
ship game just two weeks
earlier, won by the Hawks.
The Hawks finally relaxed and
played one of the best games
of the season defeating the
Vikings, 79-50. The win
moved the season record to
22-0.
Playing two games
against conference schools
really helped everyone. Both
teams, as well as several
teams attended visitation
and the funeral out of respect
for Wes, the team and the
Leonard family. Standing
ovations for each school’s
teams by all fans in attendance was truly a magical sight. Each game played gained more conference fans
attending the games. Lasting friendships have been made!
On Friday the Blackhawks foe was the Bulldogs from Covert. Earlier in the season, the Hawks had
defeated Covert by two points. This game was to be one for the ages. Fennville jumped out to a 16-13
lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs closed and led by as many as 10 points. Things didn’t look good for
the Hawks. But it didn’t affect this team. The Hawks fought back, regained the lead and held on for a 51-
48 win.
The deafening sounds of “Blackhawk Power” in each game will last in the minds of the students and
fans of FHS. Loosing Wes was the lowest of lows. But by supporting each other, each and everyone will
make it through this difficult time.
The 23-0 Blackhawks will play Schoolcraft (22-0) on Monday at 5:00pm in Vicksburg.

Coach Ryan Klingler addresses the fans at the CAC following the net being cut
down by the team.
